The useful trend is operational redesign, not another tool
The 2026 conversation around AI is moving from individual prompts toward agents and redesigned work. Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index argues that organisations capture more value when teams identify processes together, share learning and discuss quality standards for AI-assisted work.
For an SME, the practical step is to choose one workflow with a clear owner, source data and review point. Measure the time, errors and exceptions before adding automation. Keep a person responsible for the outcome even when software performs more of the steps.
Cyber resilience belongs in normal operations
The UK government’s 2025/26 Cyber Security Breaches Survey describes an environment in which awareness, risk management, incident response and cyber crime remain active business concerns. Security work is most useful when it becomes part of onboarding, device management, supplier review, backup testing and incident preparation—not a document revisited once a year.
Start with administrator accounts, multi-factor authentication, supported devices, recoverable backups and a written route for reporting suspicious activity. Assign owners and test the recovery steps that matter to daily operations.
Integration should reduce re-keying without hiding failures
Growing businesses often accumulate separate systems for sales, delivery, finance and communication. Integration can remove repeated entry, but it can also move incorrect data faster or fail silently. The important design questions are which system owns each field, how errors are surfaced and who can correct them.
Begin with a small data flow that has an observable result. Log failures, retain a manual fallback and avoid giving an automation broader access than it needs.
Technology costs need lifecycle ownership
Subscription decisions, custom software and managed IT support should be assessed across onboarding, operation, change and exit. A cheap tool becomes expensive when nobody owns configuration, data quality or supplier renewal. A development project becomes fragile when deployment and maintenance are left outside the plan.
- Name an owner for every critical system
- Record renewal dates and administrator access
- Document the data source and integration dependencies
- Agree support and recovery responsibilities
- Review whether the tool still serves the workflow before renewal
A sensible 90-day plan
List the five systems that would cause the most disruption if unavailable. For each one, record its owner, users, administrator access, backup or recovery route, supplier and renewal date. Then choose one repetitive workflow to measure and improve. This creates a grounded technology roadmap without trying to follow every trend at once.
